Senior Data Engineer

The electricityMap team is hiring a data engineer to help us build and maintain a scalable data pipeline and database that forms the foundation of our mission to accelerate the energy system to a zero-carbon future.

Our mission is to organise the world’s electricity data to drive tangible reductions in carbon emissions. electricityMap started as a popular open-source project 5 years ago and is now used every day by citizens, companies, universities, NGOs, and policy makers around the world to understand and reduce the climate impact of electricity.

You will be joining a fun, international and inclusive team in our mission to tackle climate change – while simultaneously building your professional experience in the rapidly growing industry of climate tech. Our team works out of an office in Copenhagen.

About the role

In your role, you’ll be making sure the quality and availability of our data is stellar by building and improving our data infrastructure, as well as managing our internal tools. You will also be responsible for managing our machine learning pipelines at scale. We’re a small team, so you’ll be owning a lot of your own work and initiatives, but we will be there to support you!

As more organisations commit to ambitious de-carbonation goals, we’re facing increasing demand for our data and insights, and to meet this demand we need to improve our data pipeline and other infrastructure. Your job will be to enable this by:

  • Building large-scale batch and real-time streaming data pipelines with data processing frameworks like Spark, Apache Beam and the Google Cloud Platform
  • Driving optimization, testing and tooling to improve data quality and ensure reliability
  • Working together with our open source community (a lot of our code is open source)
  • Working in an environment that supports your individual growth by providing you with interesting challenges
  • Enjoying our 2 weekly meeting-free days where you work from where it suits you. We believe in deep work and strive to create an environment where everyone is empowered to do their best, most focused work
  • Collaborating with other software engineers, data scientists and community experts to ensure that electricityMap delivers the most accurate data
  • As a member of a small but growing team, you’ll have the opportunity to be in the driver’s seat, actively shaping your role as we grow together.

About you

We’re looking for a purpose-driven and empathetic data engineer who is comfortable with autonomy and tackling challenging problems that will help the world understand and reduce its emissions.

Your personality and breadth of experience means more than years of experience. Even if you don’t fulfill all the skills listed below, do apply!

As the ideal future teammate, you

  • Know how to work with and process high volumes of time- series data
  • Are knowledgeable about data modeling, data access, and data storage techniques
  • Have experience deploying and maintaining data pipelines in the cloud
  • Have experience deploying and testing machine learning models at scale
  • Are detail-oriented and organized.

Deadline

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We can’t wait to hear from you!

electricityMap is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. You are welcome at electricityMap for who you are, no matter your background or what you look like.
